What is Traditional East/West Cupping?
In Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) cupping is a method of applying acupressure by creating a vacuum on the patient's skin to dispel stagnation—stagnant blood and lymph, thereby improving qi flow—to treat respiratory diseases such as the common cold, pneumonia and bronchitis. Cupping also is used on back, neck, shoulder and other musculoskeletal conditions.
Cupping will use heat to suck out toxins and accumulated stress and tension. The suction created through the cupping method will loosen impacted nerve endings and restoring them to their original state.
If this happens, healing will occur, especially if the therapist uses the heat promoted cupping method. Heat has been used since ancient timed for medical and folk practices. Through the application of heat, the cold channels inside the body can be eliminated and then restoring balance of heat and cold.
In the West, cupping in Greek is known as Vendouses, in Italian it is Ventoza or Coppete and in French it is Vendouse. The prefix vent is Greek meaning wind – indication the association and the effect of wind and the application of cupping to withdraw this influence.
